Spencerville Schools looking at replacing, repairing HVAC system

Spencerville School Board is looking to replace or repair the district’s Johnson Controls HVAC system. David Sudhoff from Smith Boughan gave his presentation on the proposed possibility of upgrading the entire system.

“There are concerns that this system used to be the workhouse of the industry for many years; however, two items are working against the HVAC system: This version is becoming increasingly difficult to support, the original programming has layers and layers of original programming which has made it very difficult to service over the years. The programming is suspected of causing higher than necessary energy usage. If the main controller crashes, all HVAC systems lose control, since all information is output from this control. If another major component fails, large portions of the building could lose control, depending on what area is served by the failed component. Also, a lack of backups would require extensive time to rebuild from scratch.”
If the system would fail, there would be a possibility of causing school cancellations.
Sudhoff recommended looking at upgrading the entire system.

The board said it wanted more time to look into the upgrade.
